After undergoing a complete engine rebuild, this 51-year-old BMW airhead truly deserves a fresh clutch assembly. Upon inspecting the worn components, it's evident that a replacement was necessary, as the old clutch was 2mm below the factory specifications. The deficiency could lead to clutch slippage and excessive heat in the clutch area, issues I'd prefer to avoid in the near future. To addres...

      @@WorkshopRebuild thank you! Did you do that? I’m just afraid the silicone will ball up at the tip of the Bolt when I thread it in and cause it to snap. I already had one snap off and don’t want it to happen again.

      @@diesel_dude08 I did not, but I wouldn't hurt to add some. If you apply it to the threads of your bolts, it shouldn't push downwards. You do not want to overtighten these bolts as they are quite small! I hope you were able to get the damaged part out without too much hassle.

    No idea what you do for a living but you sir are professional. I have always shied away from hydraulics. I had the repair manual that followed you almost to a T. Bravo and thank you! I repaired my F911 Steering valve. The only thing I did differently was made my mark on the outside in a diagonal. Just a double check for me to make sure I had the right plate in the correct position and not flipped. Also, I made a jig out of plate steel that I bolted it down to while I made the repair.

    Beautiful work, very interesting, congratulations on the cleanliness and precision of the work, you look like a surgeon in the operating room. But please ask me: why at min 18:09 do you put a metal tab in the hole of the pin to put the retaining clips on... for what purpose? Thank you😏

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild 10 днів тому

      Thank you for your kind words, it's much appreciated! The reason why a brass shim is being used, is due to the circlip end. With this shim in place, no scuffs or damage can be made to the piston. The ends of the circlips usually have a "sharp" edge as they are sheered from factory. One could opt for snap rings, but this is what I do when I install retaining clips. Great questions by the way. Regards Andreas

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild 10 днів тому

      Hi there, Unfortunately I do not have a Yanmar engine that I'm currently working on. The injector nozzle features a heat shield which is made of plastic and an aluminum crush washer. The plastic heat shield protects the injector nozzle and it's slid on first, then the crush washer. Once the injector clamp bolts are torqued, the washer should spread and hold the heat shield in place. You should install the heat shield as it protects the injector. I hope this helps, Regards Andreas

      The camera was shaking on the table as I made this video, and in the editing software „video-stabilizing“ was used. This then made the background stable, but made the crankshaft and camshaft rotate unevenly. I‘m not sure how it was done in the video, but that was the only way I could used this clip. The crankshaft am camshaft were both running true and I am sure of this, thanks to a dial indicator. Thank you for your concerns🍻

    Maybe make a torque value document that can be time stamp referenced in the Description and/or chapters? I mean, you know, in your spare time😊. Really a mesmerizing video of this technical art. You’re very, very good at this. I want my /5’s and /6’s back! May need to do something about that. The nearest new era thing remotely like the air head in type and spirit , imo, are air cooled Moto Guzzi transverse engines (sorry to mention, etc etc) They are well made and nice, but I just realized how much I miss these airheads. Are all the parts and the little things that can kill a practical build rather than a museum remanufacturefor these engines and bikes still readily and easily available?

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild 13 днів тому

      In hindsight, I could have added all that to this video too, but I shared a 1-1/2 hour assembly video on this engine for you to see here: ua-cam.com/video/I05J7DHoB-Q/v-deo.html This video shares every step of the assembly process, from the tooling to the torque specs and so on. This BMW R60/5 motorcycle restoration has been a cool project so far and I'm very close to the final product. I admire this engine tremendously, as I see it as a piece of artwork myself. I can only be thankful to preserve such history and allow it to last another 50 years. Feel free to mention other brands, as each has its own strengths. No bike or engine is perfect (haha)! I hope you find an exciting project to start, and indeed, there's a wide availability of BMW airhead parts on the market. You can locate nearly everything from the crankshaft upwards, to gearbox components. While like other manufacturers, some parts are No Longer Available (NLA), numerous suppliers are actively manufacturing new parts. The BMW Airhead community's solidarity is truly remarkable! If you ever need assistance finding parts, feel free to reach out. Regards Andreas
